Coach Calnen is the head varsity coach of the Troy High softball team and has earned the Troy School District Coach of the Year award nine times since 1992 including the 2008 award. He has also been honored by several area newspapers, including five-time District and Regional Coach of the Year and the Observer-Eccentric Coach of the Year award. Coach Calnen’s achievements include taking his team to the State quarter-finals five times along with two trips to the Final Four. He has also enjoyed the honor of being selected Coach for the 1999, 2005 & 2007 Division I Michigan All-Star games. In addition to coaching softball, Tom is the Vice President of the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association (MHSSCA) and a member of the Troy High Varsity football coaching staff.
As a 19 year veteran coach, Coach Calnen has assisted numerous players in the high school ranks gain exposure to college recruiters, helping support several students move on to play at the collegiate level. Coach Calnen has instructed girls at all levels of the game, whose age and experience range from first time, elementary school players to collegiate players sharpening their skills for teams. He is also very active in summer softball programs and community recreation  programs helping young athletes of all ages in the metro-Detroit area gain a broader introduction to the game of Softball and acquire the skills necessary to move on to the next level.  Â
Coach Calnen has served as a high level instructor for several years and has vast experience organizing and providing programs for players at all skill levels. He specializes in all areas of softball skill sets with special emphasis on hitting and pitching development.
